Amla and Ayurveda

“What is this?”
One of my overseas friends who visited my house showed the round shaped with greenish yellow fruit and asked the above question.
I replied him, “we call it as Amla or Indian gooseberry. Taste it with the mix of salt and chilli powder”.
He looked at me, had a piece of amla with that mix and said, “It has a sour taste but I like this”.
I remember the days when I was young. I used to drink water once I finished eating amla. Do you have such experience? Wow, it really tastes sweet!
Amla is so respected in Ayurveda. You will admit it once I explain about its benefits
.
Eating Amla with honey improves your eyesight and drinking amla juice makes one’s skin brighten.
When you apply amla with lemon juice on your scalp for 20 min and rinse off with water, you will get a shiny strengthen hair.
Amla has an excellent source of vitamin C and thus drinking its juice reduces premature gray hair, delays premature ageing signs like fine lines, wrinkles, dark spots.
It is good for digestion and a glass of amla juice has Vitamin C that is twenty times more than a glass of fresh orange juice.
I hope you understand why it is celebrated in the life of Ayurveda.  If you would like to get a natural glow look, then go for Amla!

Role of a cucumber in the Ayurvedic lifestyle

"It’s really hot now. I can’t go out without an umbrella or a shawl. I have to cover my face with the stole like a face protector”. My daughter speaks to her reflection in the mirror. I watched her and asked, “Are you going somewhere?”. “Yes mom, but I am getting afraid to go out, since it is very hot and my skin is becoming dull”. I said, “Add cucumber in your diet menu”. She raised a question, “Is that good for me?”.

I said that it is good for one’s health and skin. Most of the people are not aware of the vegetables and its uses, like my daughter. You can have a cucumber while you feel hot and thirsty. This will lessen your thirst and refresh you.

Place a slice of a cucumber on your eyes that will reduce the tiredness of your eyes and eye puffiness. Cucumber juice is good for our health and reduces hair fall. Add a few drops of lemon with the cucumber juice and then use it as a facial mask/ pack which will make your skin glow and improve your skin complexion.  Cucumber plays an important role in the manufacture of skin and hair care products. My daughter said gleefully, “I am completely prepared to be cool with the cucumber”.

Enjoy this summer with the cucumber salad!

Do not think that Black Pepper is just a small one

"Granny, did you see my new toy”? “You know what? Dad has presented me a new watch. You really missed my birthday party”. My 9 year old son Varun speaks to his grandmother who arrived earlier this morning. He has many things to share with his grandma

My wife called us to have a breakfast. My wife has prepared a south Indian dish called ‘Pongal’ which is a favourite one of her mother-in-law. “Grandma, you haven’t seen my gifts yet”, my son still wants to have a chat with my mother. I thought he is not even allowing my mom to speak. “Varun, let us have our breakfast first and then you can have a word with grandma”, I said.

Varun sits near to her grandma in the breakfast. The dish was served hot. It’s yummy smell increases my appetite. We started to have the food. “I don’t like this black colored seed”, says Varun. My mom watches him pick that black colored spice and keeping it in the corner of his plate. The grandma said, “It is called as black pepper and is good for our health”. Varun asked, “Are you speaking about this black colored one? “. “Yes, it is used for digestive problems like indigestion, vomiting, diarrhea”, the senior citizen replied. “But I do not have such problems and I am good now”, Varun tried his best to avoid the pepper. “It is always good to have pepper in the food. It has many medicinal qualities in it”, grandma replied in a polite voice. Varun raised his eyebrows in order to know more about black pepper.

“Black pepper is used in toothpaste for toothache. We can also chew it for throat inflammation. In fact, it acts as a remedy for sore throats, cold, and cough. Pepper paste can be applied for skin diseases. This superb pepper prevents ants and houseflies from entering the kitchen”. Varun wondered saying, “I thought it is just a small one but really it is great to know about black pepper. I will not try to avoid pepper anymore, grandma”.

Grandma is happy about making her grandson understand that size doesn’t matter but its characters.
